The Minimum Requirements To Get Started are:
You must be 18 years of age, not have been convicted of any serious crime ,passed a New York State Department of Justice background check and be a citizen of the United States;
Have a resident alien card (a green card), or have a work authorization card.

You are entering a field that is in high demand, so your chances of getting a job and becoming a security guard are more than excellent!
Security guard training requirements vary from state to state. Please below are the requirements in the State of New York for both the unarmed and armed security guard training requirements so you can quickly get started.
In order to become a security guard in the State of New York, you must:
•Be at least 18 years old
•Be a citizen or resident alien of the U.S.
•Pass an FBI background check (with no serious convictions or felonies)
•Submit your fingerprint through L-1 Enrollment Services (more on this below)
•Take an 8-hour “pre-assignment” training course, which you must complete and pass prior to applying to the Department of State for a Security Guard Registration Card.
After you have your registration card in hand, you can then begin work as a security guard. Within the first 90 days after employment, you must complete an additional 16 hours of on-the-job training.
Lastly, every year after that you need to complete 8 hours of additional “maintenance” training to keep your registration valid.

The schools on this approved list can be used for the 8 hour pre-assignment training, your 16 hours of additional on-the-job-training, as well as your annual maintenance training. Security Guard Training
The Security Guard Act of 1992 requires registration and training of security guards in New York State. The Division of Criminal Justice Services, Office of Public Safety provides administrative oversight for mandated security training. The New York State Department of State, Division of Licensing Services has oversight responsibility for the registration of all security guards. All security guards are required to complete an 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course prior to applying to the Department of State for a Security Guard Registration Card, followed by a 16 Hour On-the-Job Training Course for Security Guards within 90 days of initial employment as a security guard, and annually complete an 8 Hour Annual In-service Training Course for Security Guards every year thereafter. Section 89-n of the General Business Law of New York State provides for various exemptions and/or waivers of training based on previous Municipal Police Training Council approved law enforcement training.,
